Animal Care Attendant

Position: Animal Care Attendant
Reports To: Shelter Manager
Type: Part-Time/Full-Time
Rate: TBD

Position Description:
Responsibilities include feeding and cleaning of animals, giving medications and other shelter/animal care related duties. Also require computer use, data entry and generating reports using shelter software Pet Point. This position will also assist with trade shows and fundraising events. The position offers 20-35 hours per week, including weekends and some holidays.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
• Clean, feed and provide all necessary care for all animals within the shelter as assigned
• Always ensure the safety, security and wellbeing of animals within the shelter
• Intake stray or surrendered animals and enter data into the Pet Point program
• Maintain cleanliness and function of shelter and yard
• Greet volunteers and the general public, answering phones and inquiries
• Process and complete adoptions
• Refer any behavioral or medical concerns to the Shelter Manager
• Attend trade shows and assist with fundraising events as required
• Work with and provide support to other staff and volunteers as required
• Perform duties and conduct all interactions in a professional and courteous manner
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills:
• Education and/or experience in animal care and handling a definite asset
• Must be physically capable and able to carry out job duties in an efficient and thorough manner
• Ability to lift and haul up to 50 or 75 pounds
• Demonstrated ability to: Time manage, multi-task, work under pressure, work independently, maintain a clean, organized and safe work area
• Ability to work on weekends, evenings, and some holidays is required
• Good observation and reporting skills
• Excellent communication skills both orally and written is necessary
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to take direction and prioritize responsibilities
• Demonstrated efficiency, timeliness and professionalism in the accomplishment of assigned duties
• Outgoing individual with strong client service attitude
• Strong computer skills and use of Microsoft programs (including Outlook, Word, Excel and Publisher)
• Organized and pay attention to detail
• Own vehicle with valid Class 5 Driver’s license
• Ability to work effectively with all internal and external parties
• Have a genuine love for animals and the physical strength to control animals and work well with all sizes and breeds of cats and dogs
• Responsible individual committed to the mission of the North East SPCA

Work Environment:
While performing duties of the job, the employee is exposed to and at risk of hazards with:
• Unpleasant odours
• Noise
• Animal waste and excrement
• Chemicals, compounds and waste
• Bites, scratches, potentially aggressive animals
